Watch Your Phraseology!

Here is Olivia’s Helpful Guide to English Mistakes that Annoy Her.

Nip it in the butt: What? Huh? The expression is “nip it in the bud”, and it refers to gardening, people.

Pull out all the cops: Again, what could this possibly refer to? Cops? Honestly. It’s “pull out all the stops“, and it originated with the stops on a pipe organ.

Alright: All right is ALWAYS two words. All right?

Alot: I’m 99% sure this is the same way. But people still make this mistake. A lot. Wow, I need to stop these puns…

Gillotine: you say it ghee uh teen. Definitely not for when you really mean pillory.

Definately: There are two e’s and two i’s in definitely.

Wat?: I know people mostly use this in chatspeak, but is it that much trouble to type an extra h?

And this is my new favorite misspelling: conceded, instead of conceited.

Yeeeeeeeees…..I am a spelling nazi.

  1. It drives me absolutely NUTS when people write “wahla” or “waa lah” or something along those lines, and then I have to sound it out because I have no idea what they are talking about, and then I grit my teeth because it is FRENCH, much as people might not like that.

  2. I KNOW ME TOO!!!! also, a lot of people spell it viola, which makes the music geek in me laugh.
also, pre-madonna. what do they think it means, before madonna was in fashion? that makes no sense. it’s italian, people….and it’s only for women, guys get primo uomo. i still have to find a way to work that into ordinary conversation….
